You are getting married…where? Whether it’s a tropical island, another continent or merely another state you are travelling either by plane, train or automobile. So what does this mean for your photographer?
If you are travelling outside of the country you could hire someone local who you get to meet in person or someone at your destination who already knows the locations. Both seem appealing right?
There are significant advantages and disadvantages to both so it’s up to you to decide what is going to be more important.
If hiring someone local you have the opportunity to build a deeper relationship with them which can make a difference for those intimate moments which will be frozen on paper for life. Travel, lodging and meals plus tips will certainly be an added expense as well as transportation and any other incidentals that should crop up that are wedding related. It may be easier to come up with a per diem if the meals aren’t part of the venue package deal. For everything else they are on their own (such as tours, etc.)
You will want to consider flying your photographer to the site a few days early to allow for any time changes, to get settled and to scout out locations other than the venue. Does your photographer have experience travelling to destination shoots? Are they comfortable travelling with their equipments and know the ins and outs of what to do should something happen to their equipment? Do they have backup equipment travelling separately or on board?
Sit down and have a list of your questions ready. Your photographer should already have a written estimate of everything that needs to be covered and what those fees will be written into an agreement. Make sure your needs and those of the photographer are clearly defined to prevent any surprises down the road.
Don’t be afraid to negotiate. If you never ask – you will never know. Sometimes the answer will benefit you! Some photographers will also work a destination wedding for the expenses only depending on the location. If it’s a place that’s difficult to reach or unlikely they will ever travel to, then they may be open to some creative thinking on your part!

So you are busy planning a wedding – maybe you have help or maybe you are doing it all on your own. Flowers, food, dress, bridesmaids, family, invitations, photographer…
Every single moment of your wedding is important but then you think about the photographer. The person you will hire to immortalize your wedding day forever. Yes forever.
There are a few things you should think about before settling on that one person. Maybe you have a friend who takes lovely photos and is wiling to do it as a gift. Consider this carefully – not to disregard your friend but seriously. Think about this. You are not going on a picnic, or visiting Disneyworld or even having a birthday dinner and your friend is invited along and is taking photos.
This is a monumental event which covers not only the day itself but perhaps the events the day before such as the rehearsal, dinner, etc.
Depending on the skill and professionalism of your friend this may be a great idea. So here are a few things to think about regarding hiring a photographer.
When hiring a professional you are paying for certain absolute truths. First look at their portfolio. Typically this will be their website. Do you like their style?
Have a conversation with them. Set up a meeting in person. Do you like them? Do they dress professionally? Does your personality match up with theirs? Remember – you will be in intimate situations with them. Are you comfortable doing this?
Discuss terms of pricing and what is included, timeline to receive your proofs and then, after your photos are picked, when you will receive them, how many copies, and in what formats (black/white, colour, or both). Do they keep the files and for how long? What if something happens to your album five years from now and you need new photos? Sign an agreement/contract.
Go for quality with the photos and don’t worry so much about the album itself. That could be a great DIY project you can do later if budget is a concern.
Remember – your friend has a life. Your professional photographer does this daily for a living.
What happens when Uncle Joe crashes into them at the wedding and the camera lens is damaged by the champagne glass? Do they carry extra lenses with them, more than one camera? What is their backup plan? Do they have insurance? What is your responsibility in this situation if they do not? What if they get sick? Injured right before the wedding?

You’ve heard of vision boards and style boards but have you heard of Pinterest?
Putting together your wedding is a big deal and involves planning from décor, to apparel to food, entertainment and beyond.
Lists are one way to keep ideas and thoughts together but sometimes it can be difficult to explain to your wedding stylist or friends what it is you really envision.
Pinterest is an online image gallery similar to Tumblr but with the added advantage of having multiple boards laid out with images and blends Twitter type #hashtags to make items easier to find.
Imagine putting together a board for a wedding dress, colours you want to use, bridesmaid’s gifts, décor, food, hairstyles, makeup and more.
Gone is the frustration of telling your hairstylist that you want your hair to swoop down in a single curl with two braids when you can simply show him/her a collection of images from your board.
All those magazines littering the floor with paper scraps and quite possibly paper cuts (if you were me) are a memory as you gather images from the web and add them to your categories.
